Work is underway on a £12.7m “affordable” housing scheme in Chesterton that’s being delivered by the stars of the BBC’s Brickies.

Your Housing Group’s (YHG) development, situated on Watermills Road three miles North of Newcastle-under-Lyme’s town centre, will deliver 67 new homes.

The properties will be a mix of two- and three-bedroom homes, made available for shated ownership and rent to buy.

In addition, the development will include several eco-friendly features and increased energy efficiency, as well as electric car charging points.

According to YHG, the properties being built on the former brownfield site will comply with the latest building regulations, which are working towards a target to deliver net zero-energy usage by 2050.

Lorraine Donnelly, YHG’s development director, said “It’s great to work with Hodgkinson Builders to bring much-needed affordable homes to this part of Staffordshire, helping local people to get on the property ladder.”

Derby-based Hodgkinson Builders became familiar faces after appearing on the BBC reality series Brickies.

The firm was founded by director Robert Hodgkinson’s father, Ian, back in 1990.

“This is the biggest job we have done,” Robert Hodgkinson said. “It’s a significant project and it’s quite refreshing that we can lay down the foundations of continuity of work.”

He added that new jobs and apprenticeships will be created in the area, with the firm’s carbon footprint reduced due to employing local labour and contractors.

The development is expected to take around two years to complete.
