James Grundy, MP for Leigh, has joined Great Places Housing Group on a visit to the site of its recently completed £9.8m development at North Leigh Park. 

Mr Grundy, and local Councillors joined Great Places’ executive director of Growth, Helen Spencer and Countryside Properties’ managing director for the Manchester and Cheshire East region, Joe Turner for a tour of the 87-home development, a mix of two, three and four-bed homes for affordable rent and shared ownership. 

Mr Grundy also had the opportunity to meet with residents and cut the ribbon on a newly completed play area. 

Commenting on the visit, Helen Spencer, executive director of Growth at Great Places, said: “We’re pleased to have had the opportunity to show Mr Grundy and the councillors around North Leigh Park, and to meet with residents who’ve recently moved into their new homes. 

“Development of high quality affordable housing is a key priority for Great Places and Countryside shares our commitment to creating great homes across a wide variety of communities.

“North Leigh Park has transformed the former brownfield site into a new neighbourhood providing 87 much-needed affordable homes and is a real testament to the power of partnership working.”

Cllr Susan Gambles, Portfolio Holder for Housing and Welfare at Wigan Council added: “Great Places Housing Group and Countryside have produced some exceptional quality homes on the North Leigh Park, which we are delighted with, particularly as they both, like us, care deeply for the families that are living in these good quality, attractive and well insulated homes. 

“The site hasn’t been an easy one, but this has not deterred Great Places in delivering this really appealing development and it’s been an absolute pleasure to work with them, and we look forward to further opportunities, as its certainly been worth the wait.”

Mr Grundy, added: “I was delighted to have had the opportunity to a look around the new development at North Leigh Park.

“It was great to have the opportunity to speak to some of the new residents and to see how this great example of partnership working has successfully transformed this former brownfield site.”

Joe Turner, managing director for the Manchester and Cheshire East region at Countryside Partnerships, said: 

“It was fantastic to join our much-valued partner, Great Places, and local stakeholders today to celebrate the completion of this 100% affordable development in Leigh.

“It has been great to speak to several residents who are already enjoying the benefits of living in this sustainable community.

“It’s a pleasure to meet the Member of Parliament, and to showcase to him the high-quality affordable housing that we have brought to his constituency.

“Today has also been an opportunity to recognise the team we have had working at North Leigh Park, who have shown amazing dedication throughout the build process.”
